Democratic systems flourishes as African American communities advance. The evidence is clear: citizenship by birth, constitutional due process, equal opportunity legislation from education to housing to employment and fair business funding are all byproducts the systemic corrections currently called DEI. Yet, recently, DEI has been used as a smokescreen by cynical politicians and campaigners to roll back progress and consolidate power.

Measurable Consequences of These Strategies

The impact of these approaches is substantial and unquestionable. Since the start of this year, studies indicate that over three hundred thousand African American women have lost their jobs and $3.4 billion in funding initiatives supporting Black communities has been slashed – comprising $9.4m for sickle cell studies, $42 million in programs aimed at reducing maternal death rates in Black communities plus $31 million in reductions targeting asthma prevalence and environmental contaminants affecting Black children.

Historical Context with Wider Consequences

Coordinated efforts to suppress the advancement of Black communities is not new; nevertheless, historical evidence shows that whenever progress for Black people is erased, all communities face negative consequences. In the Reconstruction era, African Americans achieved remarkable progress – serving in government, building businesses and creating educational institutions. Rarely mentioned is how additional marginalized groups, from white sharecroppers to Latino gauchos, also benefited from expanded opportunities within legal and financial frameworks.

Distortion is one of the most insidious tactics. It reshapes reality in manners that limit our possibilities and institutionalizes prejudice through legislation.

When Black people encountered decades of segregation laws and government-approved bias, other communities saw a similar retreat on their access to full citizenship. As the equality movement sought to eliminate the vestiges of Jim Crow, its practices of nonviolent civil disobedience increased liberty and access not just for African Americans, but also for populations of all backgrounds. From the Native American movement to progress in gay rights to female financial independence, African American equality efforts opened the aperture for greater civil liberties.

Present Obstacles and Intentional Efforts

Nevertheless, every time African American neighborhoods gain ground, forces threatened by change work to push us back. While confronting the current regime, DEI is the bulwark ensuring a diverse democratic system. Its strength is rooted not in politics, but from the ideal of the nation's foundation: that all people possess equal worth and merit opportunity to succeed.

It's essential to recognize these assaults as components of a deliberate campaign. The objective is to rewrite the country's narrative and restrict the prospects of Black Americans, and by extension, any American considered inferior. We can be tempted to view their actions separately, but this is intentional.

Educational and Economic Consequences

Educational funding and academic initiatives are being cut, leaving Black students with reduced opportunities to pursue a quality education. These reductions also affect Indigenous learners and served as a predicate for attacks on Hispanic students. Black families still reside in areas having poorly funded education due to historical patterns of separation and disparity, and the resulting impact of slashing services disproportionately harms all low-income children and disabled people.

Funding for Black-owned businesses and vital health initiatives have been slashed, leaving our nation without the data needed to confront systemic disparities within the economic system and medical infrastructure. The follow-on effect will weaken research and investment for women of all ethnic backgrounds. Through altering who counts, who is valued and which narratives are shared, these policies compound the barriers that communities have struggled for generations to conquer.

Erasure and Suppression in Tandem

Erasure and suppression operate together, and those implementing them typically begin with the African American community. Those seeking to weaken democratic systems have eliminated African American narratives from educational materials, exhibits and collective consciousness, costing us the lessons of confrontation, remediation and redemption. Rising autocracies know to pressure educational institutions, colleges, corporations and public agencies into silence.

Moving Ahead and Collective Responsibility

The challenge currently facing us is: what will we do to these developments? Will we allow fear, disinformation and autocracy to determine the future? Or should we take action, determinedly and intentionally, to defend the truth, respect African American advancements and protect the right to opportunity for every American? The response will shape not just this moment, but the very future of our country.

Safeguarding and preserving the historic progress achieved is a moral imperative, one that demands concerted civil action. As the struggle for freedom has demonstrated, when we struggle for freedom, we win. We certainly confront coordinated attacks against reality, which are intended to create hopelessness or lead to inaction – but we must prevent this.

The country's tomorrow will not arrive automatically. Its success or failure will be determined on our decisions to do and resist today.

The national narrative started with the principle that from diversity, we could become one. E pluribus unum represents the core of DEI, the lived reality for African Americans and the proof that we can build something greater than fear and despair. Collectively, we can maintain access, respect reality and strengthen democratic systems for future eras.
